I’m a life coach and the first question people ask me is, “What is a life coach anyway?”
It’s usually asked with a mix of genuine curiosity and a bit of confusion.
Let me answer your questions and help you understand what a life coach really is and does.

A life coach is someone who genuinely cares about other people. A life coach listens to you without distractions. She’s curious about you and the way you think and do things. She wants to know all about your life. She’s curious about what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, what you think, and the results you have right now. And she’s really interested in what more you want for your life. Your hopes, dreams, and deepest desires are something that your life coach wants to understand. If you’ve lost sight of those dreams, don’t worry. A life coach can help you dig into those dreams that you’ve likely put on a shelf. She understand that you’ve been busy putting all of your time and energy into building your career, finding the perfect partner, nurturing your relationships, and raising your kids.

When you work with a coach you will learn that a life coach truly believes that you’re able to be who you want to be and do everything you really wish you could. She’s able to see your potential even when you doubt yourself. She’s able to see the way you view the world. This allows her to understand why you do the things you do. And she can help you see other options that might be difficult for you to see when you’re so physically, mentally, and emotionally focused on what you’re doing.
I like to think of the analogy of hiking a mountain. Consider yourself to be a hiker. You’re making your way up a really steep mountain on some dangerous switchbacks. You can only see the few steps in front of you. You’re focused on taking the next best steps that will keep you moving forward safely. But your coach is on a mountain next to yours with a big picture view of you and all of the mountain’s paths and obstacles. So she shares her view with you and helps you understand both your view and hers. She then helps you build the mindset needed to move forward, regardless of your doubts and fears. And she encourages you to process the information so you can take the next best step now that you can see everything more clearly. Additionally, your coach is looking out for any obstacles and helping you create a plan to tackle them ahead of time. She helps you get up when you stumble or fall. And as you move forward, she helps you celebrate your growth and success. Because, ultimately, your coach is there to help you succeed and she truly believes you can and will.
If you’re wondering if you should work with a coach, my answer is almost always yes. I think every human can use a coach. A coach helps you create what you want and become more of who you really want to become. If you have something you’ve been wanting for your life, a life coach can help you create it.
Here are 10 reasons I love working with a coach and plan to always have my own coach. (Yes, life coaches have coaches too. 😊)
