How a High-Agency Mindset Can Transform Your Career Growth

My High-Agency Mindset: Things Always Work Out for Me

A long time ago, early in my marriage, I said something to my husband that made him look at me like I had three heads:

“Things always work out for me.”

He laughed and said, “Must be nice.”

In that moment, I realized he thought I meant life magically falls into place for me, as if the universe just hands me opportunities wrapped in a bow. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

What I really meant was I trust myself to navigate whatever shows up. And I trust my ability to influence my circumstances instead of being dragged behind them.

That belief, that sense of self-trust, is what I now understand to be the foundation of a high-agency mindset. And the longer I coach women, the more convinced I am that agency is the root of every fulfilling, aligned, and sustainable career.

What a High-Agency Mindset Really Is

A high-agency mindset is the belief that you can make choices, adjust when needed, learn new skills, and influence your future. It’s knowing that you’re capable of handling discomfort and uncertainty, and that you always have options even when it doesn’t feel like it.

It doesn’t mean life is easy.
It doesn’t mean things always go according to plan.
It doesn’t mean you never feel fear or doubt.

It simply means you trust your ability to take responsibility for your part and move forward, even when the path isn’t clear.

How Low Agency Shows Up in Women’s Careers

Most women don’t recognize low agency when they’re living inside it. They just feel stuck, overwhelmed, or resigned. They think their job dictates their entire future, their boss determines their confidence, or their family determines how much is left over for them.

It shows up in quiet internal conversations like these…

“I want to take a different role, but I can’t leave my team.”
“I want more time for myself, but my schedule is out of my control.”
“I want more but I should just be grateful for what I have. Other people have it so much worse.”
“If I say no, everything will fall apart and I’ll be leaving them in a bind.”

Those thoughts make you feel like life is happening to you. They make you feel as if you have no choice, no influence, and no voice in the direction of your own career or life.

And when you feel powerless, you stop taking action and making an impact.

How Having High Agency Shifts Your Career

Having high agency is the reason I was able to say no to commitments that no longer aligned with my priorities, even when it felt awful. It’s the reason I could communicate my needs more clearly in my marriage instead of silently hoping my husband would read my mind. It’s the reason I took better care of myself, rebuilt my work, pivoted in my career, and stepped into entrepreneurship in a way that felt aligned with the woman I was becoming.

It allowed me to stop resenting the people in my life and instead take responsibility for my choices. It helped me shape my career in a way that I could actually enjoy, not endure.

Nothing outside me changed first. I changed. And everything around me shifted because of it.

How it Looks When a Woman Builds a High Agency Mindset

When a woman starts embodying this sense of agency, you can feel it before she ever announces it.

She stands taller.
She speaks more directly.
She makes decisions more quickly.
She stops apologizing for wanting more.
She stops shrinking to match the comfort of everyone around her.
She starts choosing her work instead of defaulting to what’s familiar.

Her energy becomes more grounded.
Her confidence grows without needing to be loud.
Her career opens up in ways she couldn’t see before.

It’s rarely a dramatic overnight shift. But it’s steady. It’s powerful. And it’s real.

If You’re Stuck in Your Career, This Is Your Way Forward

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin, burned out, overlooked, restless, resentful, or unsure of your next step, the answer isn’t another productivity hack, certification, or performance review.

It’s learning to trust your ability to influence your life again.

Building a high agency mindset is the skill that helps you…

  • choose your next step without blowing up your life
  • navigate uncertainty with clarity
  • stop feeling guilty for wanting more
  • set boundaries that protect your energy
  • rebuild your confidence
  • design a career that actually fits who you are now

This is the foundation of every meaningful change.

And it’s the work I love helping women do.
