Why Leadership Starts With the Standards You Set for Yourself

Raising the Bar in Your Leadership

There’s something I learned about leadership early in my career that I’ve carried with me ever since.

And if you’re a woman who wants to grow as a leader in your career and in your personal life I think it matters more now than ever.

The Lesson a Master Teacher Taught Me About Leadership

When I was a brand-new teacher, I stepped into a role previously held by a woman who had spent her entire career teaching high school Spanish.

She wasn’t just good at her job, she was exceptional. The kind of teacher students still talk about decades later. The kind colleagues trusted. The kind who created a classroom that quietly elevated everyone inside it.

She became one of my most influential mentors early on in my career.

And one afternoon, while we were talking about how to help students rise to challenges instead of shrinking from them, she said something that has shaped every part of how I think about leadership…

“If you set the bar here,” she said, lifting her hand high, “they’ll meet it. But if you set the bar here,” lowering her hand, “they’ll meet that instead. Either way, you decide the culture you’re creating.”

She was right.

Excellence grows the same way mediocrity does… through what leaders expect, model, and allow.

And this doesn’t just apply to classrooms.

Leadership Isn’t About a Title. It’s About the Culture You Create.

Every woman I work with, from directors to new managers to women redefining their career path, is shaping culture every single day.

Not just in the organizations they work in, but inside themselves.

You lead through:

  • the standards you hold yourself to
  • the habits you reinforce
  • the boundaries you set
  • what you tolerate and what you refuse
  • the tone you use with yourself and others
  • the decisions you make when no one is watching

Leadership begins in the quiet moments long before it’s recognized publicly.

The Cost of Low Standards in Your Career, Leadership, and Personal Life

If you set the bar low with thoughts like…

  • “I’m too tired, too introverted, too risk averse.”
  • “I’m not confident enough to lead yet.”
  • “They aren’t willing to change. That’s just how they are.”
  • “I should just be grateful for what I have.”
  • “This is just how things are.”
  • “I don’t have time to invest in my grow.”

You will meet that bar every single time.

You’ll shrink.
You’ll resent.
You’ll settle.

Low standards don’t just limit your performance, they limit your leadership identity and capabilities. They keep you from becoming the version of yourself you know you’re capable of being and making the impact you know you’re capable of making.

What Happens When You Intentionally Raise Your Standards

When you raise the bar, not dramatically, but with more honesty, responsibility, courage, and self-respect you’ll notice things begin to shift.

You’ll start leading yourself the way you wish others would lead.

And here’s something we should talk about more…

Your highest performers, your most courageous children, your most motivated colleagues, the people who value growth and impact won’t stay in cultures with low standards.

Not at work.
Not in families.
Not in friendships.
And definitely not within themselves.

They’re not afraid to outgrow these types of cultures. In fact, they know that’s required to be at their best. And so do you.

You’re More of a Leader Than You Give Yourself Credit For

Women who grow into influential leaders tend to have a few things in common…

  • They notice misalignment before anyone else.
  • They feel restless in mediocrity.
  • They crave growth, meaning, and integrity.
  • They want to lead with intention, not hustle.
  • They want their work and life to reflect who they actually are and what matters most.

If that’s you you’re already a leader.

Leadership is not something you wait to be chosen for.

It’s something you practice in the small daily decisions that shape your internal and external culture.

If You’re Feeling the Pull Toward “Something More”… It’s Not Random

It’s not a crisis.
It’s not a phase.
It’s not selfish.

It’s your standards calling you up. It’s your future self tapping you on the shoulder calling you to lead.

And if you want support raising the bar in your career, your leadership, or your personal life I’d love to help you build a version of excellence that’s aligned, sustainable, and deeply true to you.
